Comet Section Meeting on Saturday, May 18

This year's Comet Section meeting will be held in York on Saturday, May 18. It is the date of full moon so, with apologies to the Lunar Section, you might as well attend a meeting since there will be no observing to be done!

A lot has happened in the two years since the last meeting and we have a great line-up of speakers to keep you up to date with everything new in the comet world. The venue is only 10 minutes walk from York mainline railway station and so it is easily accesible to people from all over the UK and beyond. Everyone (members and non-members) is welcome but an email to me would be appreciated if you intend to come so that I can get an idea of numbers. Entry for members is free but we ask for a small contribution (£3) from non-members to cover the cost of morning and afternoon tea/coffee.

Full details are here

Hi Nick,

Hi Nick,

not able to make it to York, but speakers list looks good.  Will there be a video made of the meeting?

Sorry you can't make it. I

Sorry you can't make it. I hope to make videos of the talks but we had technical gremlins last time which meant that several of the talks weren't recorded. Hopefully we'll have a better run at it this time.

Been years since I was last in York, Central venue looks handy.
But no train booking right now. No obvious hotel deals.
So can't confirm till nearer the time.

James, I think train bookings are possible three months in advance so they should be available for May 18 from next weekend.

Lunch at the venue ?

Hi Nick. Three West Yorkshire Yorkies coming so far (people not choc bars). This is just a query re lunch. Presumably there is no  buffet facility on site and the one hour lunch gap does not allow time for a 'pie and pint' . It  may be worth an 'advisory' to bring a light packed lunch in the event notes ?

Lunch

Len. Good point. There are some good pubs within a few minutes walk. This being Yorkshire I'd have thought that you would be keen to save money by taking your own sandwiches into the pub and sneakily eating them whilst downing a (relatively inexpensive) beer. Perhaps York is too posh for that?

York

I've been to York many times. There is the full range of establishments: from eye-gougingly expensive but ineffably cool bars all the way to what might be described by some (more precisely, those southerners who rarely mix with provincials) as dens of iniquity. All said in jest ;)

Although the meeting speaker line up looks excellent it is too inconvenient/expensive to come by train and I understand that parking in the centre of York is pretty much a no-no so unfortunately I won;t be there,

Getting to York

Owen,

I've used Park-and-Ride facilities in York on a number of occasions and they are very good.

Inconvenience

Owen, I guess the level of inconvenience depends on where you start from! The venue is a few minutes walk from the mainline railway station which is around 2.5 hours from either London or Edinburgh and tickets aren't that expensive if booked well in advance. As others have pointed out there are several Park and Ride sites around York that would work for a day visit. York is a great city to visit too so you could make a weekend of it although best to stay some way outside the centre on a bus route if budget is limited.

For those travelling by car there is a Park and Ride bus service set up by the City Council. Here is a link https://www.itravelyork.info/park-and-ride .Hope this is useful.

YORK MEETING

Owen, shame you are not going to make it to the meeting. Your presence will be missed. Can to tellme any city in England that is not too expensive to travel to by train and where parking a car is not a problem. Perhaps we can hold the next meeting there!

Why restrict this to England. I hope that we  can one day have our Comet Section meeting in the Carnegie Hall. No, not this one but that one.

I must admit I too was tempted until I saw it was in York. Its just too far away for me. About 5hrs continuous traffic-jam-free driving or 4.5hrs on the train. Could stay for the weeknd but have other commitments.

Britain is big and, in the past, meetings have too often been in the south, so I am certainly not complaining.

Looking forward to enjoying the videos from a comfy chair.
