About the Section’s web pages

These pages are used for posting reports on Jupiter from 2015 onwards. In order to facilitate comparison with NASA image products during the forthcoming Juno mission, we will post maps and images with  north up, and may sometimes show System III longitude.  All our previous reports used the historic conventions of south up and System II longitude, and if time permits we will continue to produce these in addition to the north-up versions.

Update, 2023:  All our reports and maps now show north up, and maps are in System III longitude unless otherwise stated (though we still quote drift rates in System II, and of course the equatorial region is always in System I).  Time does not permit us to prepare everything in both systems.  Latitudes are planetographic for ground-based observations but planetocentric for Juno observations.

The previous Jupiter Section web pages are still active, at:

http://www.britastro.org/jupiter/

These contain a great deal of material including:

–‘Reference Articles’ (list of major phenomena and features, and links to our reports which contain substantial information about them  it includes our present definitions of the domains, jets, belts & zones:  https://britastro.org/jupiter/reference/jup_jets/ref_jets.htm);

–‘Guides’ (several overviews of the planet);

–‘Reports’ (all our reports on previous apparitions since 2005 to 2014/15);

–‘Publications’ (including PDFs of many of them).

–‘Links’ (many useful links to other sites):  http://www.britastro.org/jupiter/links.htm

BAA members interested in joining the Jupiter Section are invited to email the Director (John Rogers) via the BAA web site.  Email bulletins are sent out to Section members from time to time, often to notify them of items posted on this web site, or to encourage observations of specific phenomena.

We also have a Facebook page ‘BAA Jupiter Section’.
