An alternative possibility for DSLR images of brighter comets would be to create an out of focus image and blink the two, using the visual technique for estimating the total magnitude. Obviously it would be better to get the binoculars out, but some comets get lost in the sky glow to the visual observer. I failed to see 2012 S1 this morning from Cambridge as there was some thin cirrus. It was probably fainter than 8th mag, but that's what I would expect anyway. 2013 R1 was an easy object at midnight, mag 6.5 in 20x80B, but would probably be brighter from a dark sky location.
