While investigating the use of Iris to measure comets magnitudes I have noticed that large, bright
comets have a number of stars in their comae. Therefore a couple of questions;
- how does one 'remove' the effect of such stars so as to produce a more accurate value for the
total magnitude of the comet?
- if we are looking for a Visual Equivalent Magnitude should we do so as visual observers will be
estimating the total magnitude including any stars in the coma (or are they)?
