paper/article written by R.E.Schmidt of USNO for the Journal of the
Society for the History of Astronomy about the comet discoveries of the
brothers Charles and Horace Tutlle at Harvard College Observatory
between 1850-62. This account tells, in detail of the many hardships and
trials that this pair had to endure to discover comets during a period
of heavy competion. It does serve to remind the reader just how many
bright a<span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2675">nd great comets were visible
during those years. A highly recommended read for those of us who admire
the skill and tenacity of the visual comet discoverers. A pdf of the
article can be found here at this link:</span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2725" dir="ltr"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2675"><a href="http://adsbit.harvard.edu/full/2012AntAs...6...74S/0000074.000.html" class="enhancr2_86fca96d-fdb4-6550-5795-5f3e26d59bae" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2730">2012AntAs...6...74S Page 74</a><br></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2875"><br></div><div id="enhancr2_86fca96d-fdb4-6550-5795-5f3e26d59bae" class="yahoo-link-enhancr-card yahoo-link-enhancr-not-allow-cover ymail-preserve-class ymail-preserve-style" style="max-width:400px;font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;" data-url="http://adsbit.harvard.edu/full/2012AntAs...6...74S/0000074.000.html" data-type="yenhancr" data-category="article" data-embed-url="" data-size="medium" dir="ltr" contenteditable="false"> <a href="http://adsbit.harvard.edu/full/2012AntAs...6...74S/0000074.000.html" style="text-decoration:none !important; color: #000 !important" class="yahoo-enhancr-cardlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2864"> <table class="card-wrapper" style="max-width:400px;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2863" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tbody id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2862"><tr id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2861"> <td id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2860" width="400"> <table class="card-info" style="background:#fff;max-width:400px;border:1px solid #e0e4e9;border-bottom:3px solid #000000;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2859" width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tbody id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2858"><tr id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2857"> <td style="vertical-align:top;padding:16px 0 16px 12px;"> </td> <td style="vertical-align:middle;padding:16px 12px;width:99%;" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2856"> <h2 class="card-title" style="margin:0 0 4px 0;font-size:16px;font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;word-break:break-word;">2012AntAs...6...74S Page 74</h2> <div class="card-description" style="font-size:11px;line-height:15px;color:#999;word-break:break-word;"></div> </td> <td class="card-share-container"></td> </tr> </tbody></table> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> </a></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2737"><br></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2694"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2675"><br></span></div>Denis Buczynski<br id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2679"> BAA Comet Section<br id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2680"> image attached of H.P Tuttle with the 4 inch Bowditch/Merz broken back comet seeker<br><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520900826499_2693"><br></div></div></body></html>
