Hello Brian,
I am sure that Nick Kames who posted the vide footage will be able to it up again. He will be
attending the BAA meeting in London today so he will probably not see this message until tomorrow.
I well remember seeing and photographing this exceptional comet as it whizzed by us in the northern
skies. It was easily visible to the naked eye, with a diameter about the same as the moon (not as
bright though!). It was the only comet I can remember which visible movement could be seen with the
naked eye. Comet Holmes a few years ago was as large but looked more well defined, almost disc like
as it appeared in northern skies again. The varying views we get of comets as they pass through the
inner solar system are one of the main attractions in observing these important bodies. We never
know exactly what will be seen or are able to predict accurately how they will "perform". The added
attraction of Comet Iras Araki Alcock was its discovery story and the fact that it was the last
comet discovered by George Alcock. Of course all his discoveries were made visually and it is
noteworthy that only one other person in the UK has been able to discover a comet from UK skies
since then. With two potentially bright comets expected to appear in our northern skies later this
year it is good to remember the other naked eye comets of the near past which excited us all. Comet
Iras Araki Alcock was great example of how comets surprise us all the time.

Hi there,

I am really interested to know if anyone out there has video footage of
Comet IRAS–Araki–Alcock, which passed over the UK in May 1983.

I know for certain that perhaps 18months to 2 years there was a short video
on YouTube showing the comet and the tracking salelite IRAS but now when I
search for it, nothing close it shows.

My big interest in this is because I lived in London, England at the time
of this comet and was able to see it with the naked eye, almost identically
as to the video footage on YouTube.

To me it is an important piece of video footage that should be accessible
by anyone.

I have noted from this forum that there appears to a link to some video
footage to a certain Nick C Adams but the link produces nothing???!!!

Any feedback would be great.

regards
